“A Couple Embrace Wabi-Sabi Design to Travel Back to the Past.”
As we become more aware and understanding as a society, the archaic foundations begin to crumble to be rebuilt with a new design of thought and perception. And the Association for Women in Architecture + Design's Advocacy Committee is trying to translate this figurative breaking of barriers and designing of new structures into a literal accomplishment. On Thursday, October 18th the committee will meet with Jake Lazere who was present at the AIA Conference on Architecture in New York City last June to discuss how society and politics influence architecture and design, particularly the design of restrooms.
LA's buildings can be seen from miles and miles away on a less-than-usual smoggy day. You can spot them right away as they are a beacon leading you home. But have you ever really looked at the buildings? Have you ever truly appreciated the masterful architecture that makes Los Angeles the iconic city that it is? On Sunday, September 9th, Samy's Photo School will be leading a tour of LA's architecture. The beautiful buildings and exquisite designs that we usually take for granted will be explained and shown in a new light. The tour will cover the LA Central Library, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Bradbury Building, and the Grand Central Market.
The age-old debate is heated and intense -- lounging with a paintbrush in hand and a Mona Lisa-esque smile is Art, and standing erect with blueprints tucked under arm and a lightbulb overhead is STEM. Art is accused of being frilly with no real-world value, while STEM is charged with being impersonal and too cut-and-dry. Well, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles is partnering with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) to present a panel that transforms the Art vs. STEM debate into an Art and STEM discussion on Thursday, August 16th at the Schindler House in Hollywood. Will the two enemies finally realize they have much more in common than they are led to believe?
